About the book:

The story begins with a newspaper article where a 13 years old girl has killed her parents and is on the run. The book is divided into three parts where the first part deals with the story of Allison Stone who is the main protagonist of the story. Ally is a writer by profession who often gets terrible nightmares and is still trying to recover from the memories of the gruesome murder of her mother and 5 years old brother that happened years ago. She lives with her friend Sam and her pet dog Max whom she loves dearly. Ally is also in love with Danny whom she meets some months back. During this time Ally’s cousin brother Steve who is journalist moves to her town as he wishes to reinvestigate the murder of his aunt as he feels that the serial killer is still on the loose somewhere.

Part 2 of the story begins with Ally moving in with her boyfriend Danny post which a series of mysterious events and happenings start to occur. Part 3 of the book is where the heart of the thriller lies and where the events start to unfurl and where the past and the present start to overlap.

The author has written down a very fast pacy thriller which is a page turner. The foreword given in the book differentiating between psychopaths and sociopaths is commendable as this helps the reader to identify the characters better and keeps one guessing. The author has a very descriptive style of writing which makes the scenes to be very gruesome and scary and this is where I feel the author triumphs. With a clever overlapping of past and present events and journal entries, the author is able to arrest the attention and keeps you guessing. Yet the plot of the story though well structured I found it predictable. Character development in the book was good for some characters while it was sketchy for some. I personally did not understand the requirement for some characters and themes in the story.

My Verdict:

This is a good debut novel which is appreciable and I personally loved the way the story moves and it is structured well. Yet that OMG moment for me which occurred when I have read some of my favorite thriller novels in the past was missing for me in this book as I was able to predict the majority of the plot twists. The author has done well in layering how human emotions and the seething need for revenge drives one to insanity. In the end, this is not a novel for the weak hearted and if you want to read this one I request you to be mentally prepared for this as at times this novel really does scare you.

I received an ARC from the publisher for an honest opinion and review.
