About the book:

The book follows the story of August Pullman popularly known as Auggie. Auggie is a normal 10 years old who loves to play games on his X-Box and loves star wars. Yet as Auggie moves around the streets he is met with stares and gasps from the people around. Auggie suffers from a type of mandibulofacial dysostosis which has resulted in him in undergoing multiple surgeries. Thus, Auggie has a face like no other.

The book has been divided into eight parts where each part has a different narrator. Auggie has been home-schooled by his mother but when he reaches class five his parents decide him to send to a Beecher Prep School. Auggie is aghast by this as he has never been to a normal school and feels he is not ready for such a major step. The novel follows the story of Auggie in his first year at school and gives us a glimpse into his life from the perspective of various narrators like his sister, his friends and classmates at school, Auggie himself and his sister’s friend. While following their perspectives we also get a glimpse into the life of all the characters.

The writing is simple and easy to follow. This makes the book an easy and quick read. The theme of the book is a very complex one dealing with human acceptance, deformity, and teenage problems yet the author has truly triumphed as all this has been explained so lucidly and with utter simplicity. Yet in the simplicity of the language, the author is able to touch a chord with heart and evoke a myriad of emotions in you. My favorite part was the second part which was narrated by Via who is Auggie’s sister. The complexity of human nature and emotions was so cleverly done in this part. I was completely able to connect to and identify with the thought process of Via. The author has done a commendable job in character development. She has made every character so relatable and someone whom you can identify with.

My Verdict:

This book made me laugh and cry. At the end, it left me with a feeling of warmth. The author has beautifully put out that at times there is two perspective to every event or incident that needs to be understood. This book made me believe in the beauty of human nature and that at the end of the day all of us humans with all our flaws have some goodness in us. The character of Auggie is someone who has made a deep impact on me and will stay with me for a long time.

As the movie adaptation of this book releases, I strongly urge all of you to pick up this one. This is a book that you should not miss out.

Note: If you want to buy this book buy the copy which has the Julian chapter included.
